Trump and the LGBT Community

President Trump has been a longtime supporter of the LGBT community, even though the mainstream media wants him to seem like an enemy of the LGBT community. It doesn’t matter what field you are looking up the President in, he will be demonized across the board so it is no surprise that he is portrayed to be an avid anti-gay advocate, which is far from the truth. Though the real issue to the Democrats is his lack of activism against gay rights because they can’t continue the lie that Republicans are against gay rights. The truth is that gay rights are a nonissue to most conservatives because it just isn’t something questioned in the way it used to be, but the Democrats haven’t received the memo.

To start with, he has never been against gay rights. President Trump from the beginning of his campaign was being acknowledged by The New York Times for being a rare GOP candidate1 who was especially supportive of the gay community. In 2005, when Elton John married his husband, Donald Trump had nothing but positive things to say, and took to the internet to compliment the newly wedded couple:

“I know both of them, and they get along wonderfully. It’s a marriage that’s going to work. I’m very happy for them. If two people dig each other, they dig each other.”

Donald J Trump

The New York Times goes on to say, “He donated to charities focused on the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early ’90s. In 2000, when he briefly considered running for president, he gave an interview to The Advocate2, a gay magazine, in which he supported amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act to “include a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.” “It would be simple. It would be straightforward,” Mr. Trump said in the interview, adding, “It’s only fair.””

The Times reported that “as early as 1987, Mr. Trump made a $25,000 contribution to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, from profits generated by his company’s operation of the Wollman Memorial Rink in Central Park. And in 1992, the Trump Taj Mahal held an event that raised $60,000 for AIDS research.”

His views on gay rights are seen through the lens of a bottom line-minded businessman because your sexual orientation is not relevant to your ability to perform your duties. “His key concern is, Are you capable and able to do the job I hired you for? And if you are, very little else matters,” said Abe Wallach, an openly gay executive at the Trump Organization in the 1990s.

I grew up in New York City, a town with different races, religions, and peoples. It breeds tolerance. In all truth, I don’t care whether or not a person is gay. I judge people based on their capability, honesty, and merit. Being in the entertainment business — that is, owning casinos and … several large beauty pageants — I’ve worked with many gay people. I have met some tough, talented, capable, terrific people. Their lifestyle is of no interest to me.

Donald J Trump, 2000

The year 2000 showed the President’s hilarious sense of humor in a political roast, showing Donald Trump flirting with and nuzzling Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was in drag. This shows his lack of prudeness in terms of cross-dressing and what would possibly be negatively perceived homosexual behaviors:

Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani

According to OUTspoken3, a group4 of LGBT conservatives who “support freedom and diversity of thought,”, in 2000, when full marriage largely was seen as a fringe cause, Trump said in the interview he favors, “a very strong domestic-partnership law that guarantees gay people the same legal protections and rights as married people. I think it’s important for gay couples who are committed to each other to not be hassled when it comes to inheritance, insurance benefits, and other simple everyday rights.”

The president since then has fully endorsed marriage equality, making him the only president in history to assume office in support of gay marriage, telling 60 Minutes5 that the issue is “settled” and he’s “fine with it.”

In an interview in 2011 with the 700 Club6, a Christian talk show, he was straightforward about his view on gay rights. Though at the time he was on the fence about how he felt about gay marriage he still believed there should not be discrimination against gay people.

“Well civil unions, look. First of all, I live in New York. I know many, many gay people. Tremendous people. And to be honest with you, as far as civil unions are concerned, I haven’t totally formed my opinion. But there can be no discrimination against gays.”

Donald J Trump, 2011

Donald Trump is also the first private club owner in Palm Beach, Florida, to admit an openly gay couple, according to Laurence Leamer, the author of “Madness Under the Royal Palms,” a book about Palm Beach society. Trump made his club, Mar-a-Lago7, more open while fighting against the restrictions that barred Jews and blacks from joining private clubs in Palm Beach. “It’s one of the best things he’s done in my view in his life,” Mr. Leamer said in 2011. “He really changed the nature of Palm Beach.”

Rand Hoch, a gay activist who founded the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council in 1988, recalled bringing dates to Mar-a-Lago on two occasions. Both times, he said, Mr. Trump, who loves to play the role of greeter as guests arrive at his club, was pleasant and approached the two for chitchat.

“He treated us no differently than everyone else who was going through that door,” Mr. Hoch said, adding that it was not possible that Mr. Trump was unaware they were gay. “He’s perceptive, so I’m pretty sure he didn’t think we were brothers.”

New York Times, 2011

OUTspoken, also reported that “Trump came out in support of allowing gays to serve openly in the military, and ending “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” Critics have falsely claimed the president has backtracked on that with a supposed ban on transgender individuals serving in the military. That executive order8, however, does not ban transgender Americans from serving, only those currently undergoing medical intervention for gender dysphoria, which is in line with most existing military policy on any personnel undergoing prolonged medical treatment.”

“If a gay person can be a doctor or a lawyer or a teacher or take another position of responsibility, why can’t they serve this country in the military? “Don’t ask, don’t tell” has clearly failed. Gay people serve effectively in the military in a number of European countries. There is no reason why they can’t serve in the United States.”

Donald J Trump, 2000

There is a misconception that the Trump Administration has been actively working against the LGBT community. This is simply untrue. In fact, the Log Cabin Republicans, who did not support Donald Trump in 2016, have endorsed him in the 2020 Presidential Election9 because they can see that he is not an enemy to the LGBT community,

According to OUTspoken, “The Obama/Biden administration, often in election-year hail Marys, passed guidelines and policies regarding LGBTs that, without question, infringed on the Constitutional rights of other Americans, especially religious groups. For HRC, GLAAD, and their associates, LGBT equality has been redefined to mean overreach, special treatment, and prioritizing one group’s rights over others. For those organizations, gays cannot have equality without state-sponsored persecution of other communities they deem hostile.

This overreach, or gay supremacy, hurts, not helps LGBT Americans. After years of rapid gains, acceptance of homosexuality has dropped among millennials10 in recent years, not because of “hate speech on the Internet” as the media would claim, but because of the radical direction the gay rights movement has taken, spearheaded by gay media and organizations like the HRC and GLAAD as they attempt to redefine biological sex, force women to share sex-segregated spaces with biological males, advocate for children on hormone blockers, promote the sexualization of children with so-called “child drag queens,” and even flirt with embracing pederasty and pedophilia.”

President Trump was the first president in US history to have an openly homosexual cabinet member, personally appointing Richard Grenell as the US Ambassador to Germany and Acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Currently, Grenell serves as the Special Presidential Envoy for Serbia and Kosovo Peace Negotiations for the Trump Administration.

Early in 2019 there was a tragic incident11 that made international news where The Islamic Republic of Iran executed a 31 year old man for an alleged violation of the country’s anti-gay law, and the President decided to take action and launched a global effort to end the criminalization of homosexuality12. Then Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell was tasked with leading the Trump administration’s efforts to decriminalize homosexuality13 in the 70+ nations where it remains a crime to be a homosexual or conduct homosexual behaviors; including nine where it was punishable by death- Afghanistan, Brunei, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, United Arab Emirates, and Sudan. Less than a year after Trump announced the initiative while speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, Sudan removed the death penalty for homosexuals.

“I am committed to a more aggressive coordination with our European allies to make clear that criminalizing homosexuality or publicly hanging someone for being gay is incompatible with the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights”

Richard Grenell, 2019

NBC, although still attempting to cast this in a poor light, were even forced to acknowledge the tremendous support the LGBT community has from within the Trump Administration. NBC reported, “Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is supporting the work by U.S. embassies and consulates to fight violence and discrimination against LGBT people. In his Senate confirmation hearing, Pompeo asserted: “I deeply believe that LGBTQ persons have every right that every other person in the world would have.””

“While a student at Evangel University, a Christian liberal arts college in Missouri, I was taught by biblical scholars that all truth is God’s truth, no matter where it is found. The truth for LGBT people is that we were born gay. People can disagree philosophically about homosexuality, but no person should ever be subject to criminal penalties because they are gay.”

Richard Grenell, 2019

President Trump has also nominated openly gay judges throughout his presidency. The first confirmation to the judiciary of an LGBT Trump nominee being in August of 2019, the U.S. Senate confirmed lesbian judicial nominee Mary Rowland to a seat in the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois.

LGBT column The Blade reported14, “Rowland’s nomination, which President Trump first announced in June 2018, languished in the Senate for more than a year even though she enjoyed a breezy confirmation hearing15 before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The American Bar Association rated Rowland as “well qualified” for the position.”

The second openly homosexual judicial nominee16, that was confirmed, was Patrick Bumatay, a prominent federal prosecutor in San Diego, California; according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, “The confirmation comes despite a lack of support from Bumatay’s home state senators, Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris… He has worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego since 2012, mostly prosecuting cross-border drug- and human-smuggling cases”

During Bumatay’s testimony to the Senate Judicial Committee he introduced his husband, with whom he is raising twin daughters. He was confirmed in a 53-40 vote in December of 2019 as a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Bumatay became the 49th circuit appointee to be confirmed under the Trump Administration.

There are lies spread by NeverTrumpers of the Human Rights Campaign (HCR) insisting the Trump Administration “supports employment discrimination against LGBT people.” In reality, the Trump Administration submitted an amicus brief arguing that the existing law, specifically the Civil Rights Act of 1964, did not already cover LGBT people, and, if the law were to cover anti-LGBT discrimination, it would need to be changed.

At the time the law was passed, in 1964, it would have been unheard of for any politician in the country even contemplating banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT groups have been literally arguing for decades exactly what the Trump administration argued in court, the law doesn’t currently cover LGBTs; yet they found a way to make it look like he was against LGBTs.

The OUTspoken also reported that, “The deceptively-named Equality Act was anything but and would have legalized religious persecution and stripped away Constitutional rights regarding religious freedom. Several LGBT organizations, including the Log Cabin Republicans, opposed the Equality Act because it targeted a small number of religious groups from openly practicing their beliefs. The Equality Act was largely seen as LGBT overreach and not promoting equality for all Americans.”

There is still rumor that President Trump’s Executive Order bans transgenders from serving openly in the military. This is false information to hurt the president. It only applies to those currently undergoing medical intervention for gender dysphoria. “This is in line with almost all existing military policy regarding personnel who require prolonged, regular medical care, including diabetics. The policy is also in line with existing rules on enlistees currently undergoing mental health treatment, or who have experienced mental health problems in the past. Until May 2019, the World Health Organization listed Gender Identity Disorder as a mental illness. The ban on transgender in the military remained in effect for nearly all eight years of the Obama presidency. In June 2016, Obama lifted the ban just ahead of the 2016 election,” wrote the LGBT column, Out Spoken.

Another myth that Snopes has decided to back as an attack against the LGBT community17 is as claimed by the HRC, “HHS created a new office whose sole purpose would be to defend physicians and other medical professionals who decide to refuse care, including to LGBTQ patients” and “rules designed to allow health care providers to refuse to treat a patient on religious or moral grounds.”

This is less an attack on transgender patients than a renewing of religious freedoms that should not have been stripped in the first place. The Leftist medias try to make it so that transgenders are a protected class at the expense of the religious freedoms of others. This goes along with the “transgender ban” claim in the military. This does not stop transgender from receiving care, it simply allows healthcare providers who stand by science over ideology to practice in ways that reflect that. Anyone it would prevent the patient from getting care from would in essence be someone whom the transgender patient would likely not want care from because of their conflicting beliefs anyway. It is being used as a reason for outrage among the LGBT community.

OUTspoken stated, “Much of the implication from Left-wing LGBT groups involves patients diagnosed with gender dysphoria seeking hormone replacement therapy and sex-reassignment surgery. Not all physicians agree this is the best treatment for gender dysphoria, as there’s no evidence that medical intervention lowers suicidality in transgender patients. The Trump administration’s directive allows physicians to decline treatment they feel is harmful or violates their personal beliefs, while there remains no shortage of doctors who may feel other ways and are available to treat patients.

The rule proposed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development would consider biological sex, not gender self-identity in placement of people in single-sex emergency shelters. The proposed rule would scrap the Obama administration’s 2016 guidance requiring such shelters to accept transgender people but retains its 2012 rule18 barring federal housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The intent of the proposed rule appears to be to protect women and children in women’s shelters, many fleeing domestic violence, from encountering and being forced to sleep alongside biological males, which may make them feel unsafe. The rule allows for shelters to decide when biological males should be housed alongside women. Obama’s mandate meant the government forced battered women’s shelters to take in biological males if they identified as women. The HUD proposal allows shelters to operate as single-sex accommodations should they chose to do so and does not affect LGBT-specific housing shelters.”

The HRC also claims “Trump and Pence, over LGBTQ and other issues, removed the United States from the U.N. Human Rights Council.” They’re not wrong, but it is not an act against the LGBT community. The Trump administration left the UN Human Rights Council because other nations, such as Sudan, Nigeria, the Congo, Bahrain, and Afghanistan, that oppress, imprison and murder homosexuals were also members on the Council. The Trump administration left in protest because the Council was hypocritical and refused to call out the human rights abuses of other nations on the council.

The Trump Administration has helped on the HIV front during his presidency as well. In a huge gesture to the LGBT community, in May of 2019, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex M. Azar II announced19, “as a result of discussions between the Trump Administration and Gilead Sciences, Inc., the pharmaceutical company has agreed to donate pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for up to 200,000 individuals each year for up to 11 years.  PrEP is used to reduce the risk of HIV infection in individuals who are at higher risk for HIV. It has been shown to reduce the risk of new infection by up to 97 percent when taken consistently.

The agreement between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Gilead will last until at least December 31, 2025 and possibly through December 31, 2030, and will provide medication to treat individuals who are at risk for HIV and who are uninsured. This donation will deliver Gilead’s PrEP medication Truvada, which currently carries a list price of more than $20,000 per patient per year, to up to 200,000 people per year, including in the states and counties identified as priority areas in the Trump Administration plan20 to end the HIV epidemic in America.

Gilead will donate Truvada until its second-generation HIV preventative medication, Descovy, becomes available.  At that time, Gilead will donate Descovy.  The agreement would end after 11 years, or when a generic version of Descovy becomes commercially available, whichever comes first. The government has agreed to cover costs associated with distributing the drugs.”

Though the Democrats would like gay conservatives to believe they are an anomaly in an intolerant party, in October 15th 2020, Newsweek came out with a survey21 of 1,200 queer men in the United States, done through the dating app Hornet, that found 45% planned on voting for Republican incumbent President Donald Trump. This is in stark contrast to the exit polls from the 2016 presidential elections found that at least 75% of LGBT voters supported Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump, while only a reported 14% favored then Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump.

Gay attorney, former State Department intern, and Log Cabin Republicans of Los Angeles President Joshua Herr, wrote an article for The Federalist titled Donald Trump Has Done Far More For Gay People Than The Stonewall Democrats22 where he explained, “many of Trump’s most fervent supporters are LGBT people. Left-wing gay activists, however, depend on creating the impression that all LGBT people are Democrats. Democrats then use this false narrative to consolidate unearned moral authority. That is why, when the prominent gay billionaire Peter Thiel expressed support for Trump, The Advocate promptly ran a piece arguing he isn’t actually gay — he just has sex with men. (Really. They did that. Look it up.)”

He continued on to say, “the point of such chicanery is to insinuate that all Republicans are homophobes, and all homophobes are Republicans. That only works if Democrats speak for all gays. So just one prominent gay or trans Republican punctures the lie that the left has a monopoly on gay rights. Log Cabin Republicans stand to disabuse the public of that lie. The Stonewall Democrats don’t want you to know we exist. But we do, our ideas are better than theirs, and we’re not going anywhere.”

According to a poll23 done by Hart Research Associates and HRC, of 400 likely voters24 in multiple key swing states support for LGBTQ equality is overwhelming positive, including among supposedly anti-LGBTQ Trump voters.

If you are a person in the LGBT community, and you feel alone I encourage you to reach out to people in different conservative LGBT communities. You are not alone!! The Log Cabin Republicans25 are the Stonewall Democrats of the conservative side of the aisle. You can go to their website to find a chapter near you. Their column OUTspoken26 has tons of articles that can help you feel more confident in your party choice, in your support of our President, and in knowing that your party supports you.

There are prominent gay members on the conservative side of the aisle like Dave Rubin of the Rubin Report27 whose fabulous show was once a talk show on the Left until an interview with Larry Elder helped him realize that he actually aligned with the views on the Right more, though he still calls himself a Classical Liberal.

Brandon Straka, the founder of the WalkAway Campaign28, a group meant to empower those deciding to leave the radical Democrat party and show others that they’re not alone, is also a gay man in the conservative world, was actually harassed, called homophobic slurs, and attacked by Black Lives Matter “protesters” on his walk back to his hotel after the Republican National Convention.

The fact of the matter is that ultimately the Left wants people to believe that conservatives are anti-gay and a foe to the LGBT community, when it could not be a nonissue further from the list of concerns to most conservatives in America. The problem is that it is a wedge issue that the Left doesn’t want to be eradicated within the Republican party, even though it already has been.

There is no systemic homophobia, couples can walk around holding hands or kissing no matter their sex, homosexual couples raise children, and one can bring their same sex spouse to a company dinner. It is not looked at through the obscene scope the Left would want you to think we see it through. Today in America, we live in the most accepting country under the most accepting administration29, and people are free to love whichever sex they prefer and live as whichever sex they want to live without persecution in America.

  1. The core of your writing while appearing reasonable originally, did not sit very well with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the sentences you actually managed to make me a believer unfortunately just for a while. I however have got a problem with your jumps in assumptions and one would do nicely to fill in all those breaks. In the event that you actually can accomplish that, I would certainly be fascinated.

  2. Can I simply just say what a comfort to uncover a person that truly knows what they are discussing on the web. You definitely understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More and more people really need to read this and understand this side of your story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular since you certainly possess the gift.

  3. whoah this weblog is fantastic i like reading your articles. Stay up the great paintings! You know, a lot of people are searching round for this info, you could help them greatly.
